Abstract
An evaluation was performed for the therapeutic efficiency of 9-month short course chemotherapy under programme conditions for pulmonary tuberculosis in terms of negative conversion, relapse and drop-out rates. The regimen was consisted with isoniazid 400 mg, ethambutol 800 mg and rifampicin 450 mg. 1,429 sputum smear positive tuberculosis patients have been registered during the period of one year from April 1, 1981 through March 31, 1982 to 16 Health Centres in Seoul and Chungbuk. 22 patients( l. 5% ) were subsequently excluded due to various pretreatment reasons, leaving 1,407(98. 5% ) for main analysis. Out of 1, 407 patients for the main analysis, 278(19.8 % ) had terminated their treatment prematurely; the drop-out rates in Seoul and Chungbuk being 17.6 % and 25.0 % respectively. Affiong 1, 129 patients who had completed their treatment, 1, 052 attained bacteriologically favorable response; the negative conversion rates in Seoul and Chungbuk being 93.0% and 93.7% respectively. Bacteriological relapse rates within one year after the termination of treatment, calculated by Life Table Method, were 2.8% and 8.7% in Seoul and Chungbuk respectively. The negative conversion rates were equivalent between the two areas(p>0.05), however, the relapse rates were significantly different(p<0.001) and the drop-out rates as well(p<0.01).
