A Study on Unclassified Mycobacteria Isolated from Human Sputa

Abstract
Disease due to anonymous mycobacteria is not rare in other countries, although a few years ago it was thought to be almost a curiosity. Authors summarized the results of identification and classification of mycobacteria isolated from 22, 123 sputa which were collected from the patients at Health Center in Seoul and Kyung-Ki province in 1968. Those cultures were identified according to the Runyon's classification and the other methods. The results obtained are as followings: 1) TotaI strains of acid fast bacilIi isolated from 22, 123 sputa were 3, 646 or 16.5%. 2) The Strains of M. tuberculosis among the totaI strains of acid fast bacilIi were 3, 549 or 97.3%. 3) The strains of uncIassified mycobacteria among the totaI strains of acid fast baciIIi were 97 or 2.7%. 4) AIl strains of uncIassified mycobacteria were identified according to the Runyon's classification as foIIowings: Number of st strains incIuded in Runyon's Group II were 43 or 44.3%. Number of strains included in Runyon's Group III were 49 or 50.6%. Number of strains included in Runyon's Group IV were 5 or 5.1%. But we could not find out any strain of Photochromogens. 5) Forty three strains of Runyon's Group I were subdivided into 5 groups according to the Enzymatic activities. Among them 11 strains were indentified as “ScIofulaceum" type Scotochromogens. 6) Forty nine strains of Runyon's Group III were subdivided into 8groups according to the Enzymatic activities. Among them 31 stlains were identified as ‘ Radish" type Nonphotochromogens and 2 strains, as "V" type Nonphotochromogens. 7) Five strains of Runyo’s Group IV were subdivided into 2 groups according to the Enzymatic activities. Among them 1 strain was idntified as M. fortuitum.
