Abstract
Two cases of pulmonary mycetoma were reported and the literatures on the subject were reviewed. The first case was a 23-year-old male laborer who was entirely asymptomatic. His chest lesion was found incidentally on a routine chest film, which revealed a well-defined homogeneous ovoid density topped by a crescent-shaped air space in the right upper lobe. The second case was a 38-year-old male driver whose chief complaint was recurrent hemoptysis. The chest films showed cavitary lesions within hazzy infiltrative densities in the right middle lobe. In both cases, tests of sputum and specimens obtained by bronchoscopic washing, brushing and transbronchial lung biopsy were unremarkable. Diagnosis in both cases were confirmed by the discovery of fungal elements from the surgically resected spècimen.
