The incidence of open-negative syndrome and open healing of cavities and correlation between them, were studied with regard to 212 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and cavitation, and 114 resected specimens containing cavities. The results are briefly summarized as follows: 1. The open-negative syndrome occurred in 9% of patients with cavitation undergoing prolonged chemotherapy and the syndrome was most commonly seen in cases with relatively thin-walled, large cavities. 2. Of the resected specimens with cavities 7.9% showed open healing; 3 out of 6 cases with open negative syndrome before resection, showed open healing of cavities. 3. Amongst 15 macroscopically open healing cavities, 13(87%) showed complete histological healing and 2(13%) showed unhealed histological findings. |
