Abstract
1. In order to study maximum aerobic power maximum oxygen intake was measured on pneumonectomy patients (three males, five females) and control group (seven males). 2. The methods of testing were as follows: checking of minute ventilation by Tissot spirometer, heart rate by polygraph, oxygen uptake by gas analysis with Scholander analyzer and work load was given by bicycle ergometer. 3. Each case varied with the minimum workload recorded being 150 kpm/ min. and the maximum 1450 kpm/ min. Among the male patients the average were 933 kpm/ min. while the female s showed an average of 440 kpm/ min. and the control male group’ s average were 964 kpm/ min. 4. Maximum minute ventilation and maximum oxygen intake were considerably lower than normal. 5. Respiratory quatient was increased in maximum exercise in about half of the cases. 6. with an increase of the work load, there was a corresponding heart rate increase of up to 200 beats per minute in the majority of cases. 7. Generally, especially in female cases, the maximum oxygen intake was relatively good. So it appears that pneumonectomy patients are not hindered very much in their daily life.
