Abstract

The Seoul School Health Center has made consecutive photofluorography surveys for three years (1 97l -1973) on the fourth graders, the first grade middle school students, the high school sophomores and the staff of the Seoul City schools. After the surveys, those who had lesions suggestive of tuberculosis were x-rayed again to eliminate erros during the readings of the small films as much as possible. Through these projects of the Center the prevalence thend of tuberculosis in each group was made clear. 1. The prevalence of tuberculosis among the primary school children was 0. 38% in 1971 , 0, 39% in 1972 and 0.12% in 1973. The decreasing trend of tuberculosis was not observed between 1971 and 1972 but marked decrease of the disease was observed between 1972 and 1973. 2. The prevalence of tuberculosis among the first grade middle school students was 0.67% in 1971, 0. 50% in 1972 and 0. 18% 1973. A símílar decreasing trend of the disease was observed in both middle and prímary schools. 3. The prevalence of tuberculosis among the first grade hígh school students was 0.83% in 1971, 0.86% ín 1972 and 0.32% in 1973. A simílar trend was observed in the decrease of the disea'se in thís group as was obserued in the míddle and primary school groups. 4. The prevalence of tuberculosis among the staff was 0.91 % in 1971, 0.35 % in 1972 and 0.52% in 1973. A decrease in the prevalence rate of thís group appeared between 1971 and 1972 and the prevalence increased in 1973 whích was difficult to explain. 5. Each of the four above groups was compared with íts counterpart age group in the general population. The prevalence rates of the study groups were markedly lower than those of the counterpart age groups in the general population.
