DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF COIN LESION IN THE LUNGS

Abstract
In the period 1956 -1961. 81 cases of solitary round lesions in the lungs were observed in the Lung Department of the University Clinic in Oslo. The clinical diagnosis was tuberculoma in 29 cases, malignant Pulmonary tumor in 36 cases and benign Pulmonary tumor in 16 cases. On the basis on the radiological picture, bacteriological, cytological and histological investigations, or by other methods, a definite or extremely probable preoperative diagnosis was made in 32 of the 81 cases. In 8 cases with definite or probable tuberculoma thoracotomy was not carried out. The remaining 73 cases were all operated and a histological diagnosis was made. On the basis of our experience with these cases we consider that solitary round lesions should be removed operatively. This point of view also generally applies to cases of tuberculoma, unless there are special contra-indications.
