The National Medical Center
Abstract
1) Among 44 of operated lung abscess cases, 42 were followed up for months to 5 years (average 24 months) after surgery. 2) Thirty out of 42 were cured (71 %). Analysis of 12 failured cases show 3 cases of broncho-pleural fistula. 4 cases of empyema. 3 death and 2 other complications. 3) The main causes for failure are thought to be long duration of illness, expensive lesion. multiple or giant cavity and extensive resection like pneumonectomy. 4) Lung abscess preferably betreated by medical means in early stage with good effect but surgical treatment should be taken into consideration as soon as medical cure is not expected but 1- 2 month of medical treatment seems to be needed prior to surgical procedure.
