Abstract |
The cardiopulmonary eκects cI pneumothorax and hydrothorax induced by the injection of 300 ml. of air and 6% dextran, respectively, into the right pleural cavity were studied in mongrel dogs anesthetized with sodium thiopental, and the following results were obtained.
1) Respiratory rate and minute ventilation were significantly increased in both groups, whereas tidal volume was somewhat decreased in the hydrothorax group and was not significantly changed in the pneumothorax group.
2) Arterial O2 saturation and CO2 tension were considerably decreased and O2 consumption was somewhat increased in both groups. These changes in arterial respiratory gases were thought to be due to uneven ventilation.perfusion ratio and hyperventilation.
3) Heart rate and total peripheral resistance showed no significant changes but cardiac index and femoral artery mean pressure were considerably decreased in both groups, and the fall in femoral artery press.
ure was thought to be caused by decreased cardiac output and hypocapnia.
4) Femoral venous pressure and right ventricular pressure were not significantly altered. Mean pulmonary
pressure was somewhat declined and total pulmonary resistance showed some fluctuation in both groups. |
