Abstract
Etiology of hemoptysis in patients with healed pulmonary tuberculosis is variable. We performed bronchoscopy, bronchography and bacteriological studies of bronchial aspirates in 16 patients 、v ith hemoptysis which developed after adequate antituberculous chemotherapy to evaluate the etiology of hemoptysis. The results were as follows; 1) 1n 16 cases, the etiology of hemoptysis occurred after adequate antituberculous chemotherapy were active pulmonary tuberculosis (4 cases), bronchiectasis (8 cases), bronchitis (3 cases), aspergilloma (1 case). 2) Hemoptysis due to bronchiectasis occurred in relatively old age (50th and 60th decade). 3) 1nterval from antituberculous chemotherapy to hemoptysis was 2.4 years in active pulmonary tuberculosis and 14.5 years in bronchiectasis. 4) Simple chest x.ray examinations did not reliably differentiated active disease from inactive pulmonary tuberculosis. 1n conculusion, etiology of hemoptysis after adequate chemotherapy is variable. Microbiological studies are essential to diagnose active cases and bronchoscopy and bronchography are useful in some cases.
