Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the attack rates of tuberculosis in contacts of patients treated on an ambulatory basis. Tuberculosis patients among the contacts discovered at the time of the index case was diagnosed were excluded from the study. The attack rates of tuberculosis in 374 contacts of 145 index cases treated at home were observed for one to three years. During the observation period, the tuberculosis infection rate among contacts under the age of 14 was 34 .3 percent but the morbidity rate for the entire group was only 1.9 percent. lt is felt that the treatment of active tuberculosis at home can be undertaken without exposing the contacts to any special risk of contracting the disease.
