Abstract
Bronchiectasis, which occurs at a relatively low rate in the general population, 1. 3 out of 1. 000, often makes both the clinician and patient confused due to its symptoms which are similar to those of pulm. Tb. This becomes especially so in Korea where there are a large number of pulm. Tb. patients. The writer has investigated clinical dates and findings of 62 hospitalized patients having bronchiectasis at Sev.erance Hospital from 1962 to Oct. 1967. The results are briefly summarized as follows; 1. The disease may occur at any age, but most commonly the patients are 10-29 years of age. 2. The duration of symptoms was within a 10 year period when they first consulted a physician. 3. The extent of the disease was usually confined to 1 or 2 lobes and involved the left side more often than the right. The involvement was usually of the lower lobe, middle and upper lobe in that order. 4. The cylindrical type of dilation was most common followed by the secular and mixed type. 5. The most common manifestation of bronchiectasis was hemoptysis while 22.6 % of the patients were asymptomatic. 6. In most of the cases, no pathogenic organism was found in the sputum, and B-streptococci was found only in 2.6 %. 7. The surgical indications were present in 53.2 % of all the patients, but only 75 % of these underwent surgery. 8. Complicated by tuberculosis, lung abscess and atelectasis of 15.3 % in the pathological diagnosis.
