A Study On Subgrouping of Unclassified Mycobacteria Isolated From Soil Source in Korea

Abstract
1. Twenty five percent out of 59 samples yielded at least one strains of mycobacteria; There was none of Runyon Group I equivalent. Group II organisms were isolated from 13.6 percent, Group III were from 54.6 percent, and G Group IV organisms from 31.8 percent of the samples. 2. Sabgroups of scotochromogens; Most of the scotochromogens were scrofula type and one third of the group was tap-water type. Subgroups of nonphoto hromogen; 54 percent of this group belong to M. terrae, in 33 percent Battey type, and in 13 percent M.gastri respectively. 3. As a means of determining the virulence of unclassified mycobacteria, the rate of ulcerarion by intracutaneous inoculation of guinea pig was conted. The results were comparable with standard controls. That is, with Battey type 80%, Scrofula type 66%, M. terrae 50% ulcerations formed. However no ulceration could be found with M. gastri and M. tpa-water. 4. Those organisms were also tested for virulence in mice. The organisms were injected intravenously in mice in a dose of 1mg., moist weight. The visible lesion could be seen in liver with two of Battey type, one of scrofula type, and one of M. terrae, whereas no lesion with tap-water type and M. gastri.
