Abstract
Pleural mesothelioma is a relatively rare neoplasm originated from pleural mesothelial cell. Pleural mesothelioma associated with hypoglycemia was reported by several authors but has not been reported yet in Korea. We herein report a case of malignant mesothelioma of the pleura associated with hypoglycemia in a 69-year-old male. He had frequent episodes of mental confusion and loss of consciousness. We proved hypoglycemia during these episodes. He was recovered by the infusion of 50 ml of 50% glucose solution, but he needed 20% or higher concentration glucose solution infusion to prevent his symptoms. The oral glucose tolerance test with the simultaneous measurements of serum C-peptide and insulin was normal except fasting hypoglycemia. A 1300 gm weight, 20 cm by 17 cm sized tumor was excised, which was mesothelioma of low grade malignancy. He has been free of disease and symptoms for 2 years.
